Marketing, Advertising jobs working on ad campaign ideas, slogans... creative thinking.? |
I'm about to graduate from cleveland state this december with a marketing degree. I love the creativity involved, coming up with ad campaigns, slogans, brand identities... think on your feet, working within a team, presenting your ideas to prospective clients and all that. For each of my past bout 5 classes our semester project was to break into teams and come up with a comprehensive ad campaigh for a specified company... I loved it and always seemed to do great. The problem is i can't seem to find a job that entailes those aspects of marketing. All i seem to find are jobs doing door to door sales, brand sales reps, and mortgage borking. I want to find a job working for a company that is contracted out by other companys to come up with ideas for their marketing needs. To be creative and be rewarded for such. Is this just a pipe dream... do such jobs exist, and if so where do i find them? Would going to a head hunter be a good idea? Also i wouldn't mind relocating at all. You are facing the issue many new college graduates face. You have the motivation and the heart for what you really want to do. However, you don't have the experience. When it comes to marketing, there are many different aspects. Sales. Creative. Research. To be an effective marketer, you will need to develop skills in all areas. It sounds to me though, like you are finding sales jobs (which are typically easier to find), when what you want is to start in a position requiring more creativity. I was a marketing director for a financial institution for 20 years, and I hired several students right out of college for my team. They had worked for me as interns during college though. I know many ad agencies do the same. Did you do an internship while in college? I don't know what your financial situation is, but could you offer to serve a several month internship at a company where you would really like to get your foot in the door? That would give you the opportunity to show them what you can do. If that just isn't a possibility, target the businesses where you would like to work. Ad agencies seem logical for the type of work you're seeking. Possibilities you may not have considered are companies with in-house marketing departments or directors. Even if you're the lone marketing person in a company, you would still have the team collaboration with other departments in your company. Consider banks and credit unions. Hospitals. Auto dealerships. Hotels. Non-profit organizations. Even if you don't want to make a career at one of these companies, it will give you a start. Make sure you have a portfolio of your work when you interview, to show your creative ability. If you REALLY want to make an impression, come up with a sample campaign for that company and include it in your portfolio. If you do this, just make sure it is an excellent campaign. For the type of work you are wanting to do, you are going to have to make some extra effort to prove yourself. There are too many "creative marketers" who have gone before you who have already proven themselves and are after the same jobs. I don't think you need a headhunter. You need to take a step back and develop a marketing plan for yourself! What types of companies do you want to target? What sets you apart (USP)? (Dont' just tell them, show them.) Start to network. Pick up the phone and start calling marketing directors in your area as well as those who may be in areas where you want to relocate. As you talk to marketing directors, they may not have an opening but they may know someone who does. Don't be pushy, just ask if they know of any entry-level positions. By doing this you are also showing your initiative and sales side, which may be just enough to get your foot in the door. Source(s): Twenty years as a marketing director and now marketing advisor at http://www.marketing-small-bus... Why don't you apply for a cellphone company, T-Mobile is the best. They allready have locations that will be given to you. You will be in charge of helping the stores to do better in their selling, it's so much fun. I wasen't a representative but I sold phones. And they were able to so much things. You will love it. |
