In auto sales, if I take a call from a person inquiring about our cars, when does he/she become my customer?

For example, customer calls in, call is transferred to me, he's interested in knowing what we have in inventory but not quite ready to buy... just shopping around. Fast forward two months: same customer makes another call and speaks with another salesperson who closes a deal, who should get credit for the deal? The original salesperson, or the guy who closes the deal?

I sold a car today to a guy who called in and spoke with another salesman two months ago. Other salesperson made no follow up calls to this customer, didn't make enough of an impression for the customer to remember his name. However, other salesman believes that since he originally spoke with this customer that he should receive credit. Most dealerships have strict rules about this like 60-days no contact with customer, he's fair game, however if you close a sale, he's your customer for life. Your thoughts?

If you closed it, you sold it, so you get the credit. That is generally how it works. They became your customer when you begin to provide them with the necessary information they needed to make a decision to purchase. Obviously the other salesperson did not close and that customer didn't even ask for him and will never ask for him. He will be your customer for life if you build rapport with them and remind them to call on you at any time.
I think whoever closes the deal wins. I mean c'mon. YOU sold the car to the customer, not him...He just talked about it. Tell the guy to f**k off he's just jealous.
If you closed the deal and the buyer did not request the other salesperson and he did not assist you in anyway, you should get all the credit. If your manager hasn't already laid down the rules regarding this, then it would be best if there were one in place to obviate instances like this.
he/she is yours for life. If you were not nice to today maybe he/she would have hang up the phone and keep looking around but you earn the trust and sold the car.....
