Career as advertising or marketing manager and psychologist...? |
i was just reading about advertising and market managers and it seems like a really cool job. im also interested in becoming a child psychologist(im 17 by the way, looking into colleges now). could someone become both? i read that for advertising jobs u need a bachelor degree, and i know that for being a psychologist u should have at least a masters. so here is my question...do you think that i could major in psychology and minor in advertising? i am thinking that after the bachelors degree i could get an advertising job while i am finishing my masters, and who knows, maybe even phd! lol. i heard psychology and advertising can work together great cuz you are trying to see how people think. what do u think of my very hypothetical plan so far? could it work? do u need to major in advertising in order to get a job as an advertising manager, or can i minor in it? i have lots of questions so i appreciate everyone who helps! I am also a college student who just switched majors from psychology to marketing so I understand what you're saying. I switched because I didn't want to put in all the years for psych. So i would think that your plan sounds very good, but I also think that you should look more towards the marketing manager aspect of it because it will fit in more with psych. If you did decide to go with marketing you could maybe get a job in marketing with the bachelor in psych which would save you time in not having to do a minor, but if your dedicated it wouldn't be a bad idea, so i guess no you don't need a degree in advertising to get a job in it. Also keep in mind that you will most likely not get hired as an advertising or marketing manager, that is something you have to work up to so if you plan on changing careers after you get a masters or phd you may not get to that level at that point. One last piece of advice...Go to UW madison, they have a great business school and one of the best psych programs in the country. (i'm byast though :) you're on the right track though so good luck! Advertising is a wide range. You want to be an art director, copy writer etc.... do you know which part in advertising? You should study psych. + marketing, to find out why cusumer buys or what makes them buy. Advertisting is like how to create ADs. Look into marketing to see if that is the career you want to work with. 1. Advertising is advertising. It an appeal to the public to purchase something. 2. Psychology is the study of the mind and its processes, feelings, motivations, etc. Whereas they may appear to have the same origins they don't. Advertising requires writing skills, graphic skills, and the analytical skills to interpret performance. Psychology is a medical field addressing mental conditions and emotional issues. Psychiatrists require a medical degree. Social psychologists who work in such areas as marriage counseling, aging and dying, usually have a Master's of Science. I have spent the past couple decades in marketing and advertising which I find fun and rewarding. My masters is in Business Administration. I don't need an MD. My recommendation is to major in marketing and minor in English or mathematics. You'll need to be able to analyze statistical data. |
