What is the field of marketing like? |
i am a freshman in college and i am trying to decide what my major should be. right now i am bouncing back and forth between education, criminal justice, psychology, communications, and english. i have an interest in going on to law school and possibly working for a non-profit organization once i graduate. i was wondering what the field of marketing was like (since i am now adding it to my already swelling list of career aspirations), how much money can you make, and what kind of person goes into marketing? do you have to be good at math? whats the deal? lol My degree at university had a strong emphasis on marketing, and it was the best part. Maths is not an important part of marketing, an ability to research well and be imaginative, to create marketing strategies is. Marketing can be very useful for many business related fields. Most organisations will have specific marketing depts, though media, and promotions/ sales will also be areas that may be of interest for a marketing student as well. I tried finding a marketing related role after i graduated, but found out that it was very compeitive. The lines between Marketing and Sales are very blurry. I am a Marketing Channel Manager for an Investment Bank in Manhattan. I love my job! Basically, I create all of the marketing and communication strategies for my distribution channel. I am very closley aligned with sales and many times I travel with them to proposed marketing efforts with partner firms. It is a fast paced job, but the pay is great and the benefits are even better. To be in Marketing you definitely need a "creative" flair to come up with insightful concepts. And NO you do not have to be good in Math... That's why I like marketing...no math :) It's wide open for real creative people....I mean globally, try learning a second language and explore international marketing. |
