Is this a normal mistake for sales on the first 2 weeks of working? (inside sales)?

so I'm taking care of another reps account since she was on vacation and so her customer calls me to ask me for something. I looked on the website and couldn't find it so I told him I don't see anything just this item and that. After I hung up, I asked another rep and he goes "yeah we have lots of what that guy was looking for" I pretty much screwed up and called the customer back, he's like "yeah I'm looking at your website you do have it..." I felt like an idiot afterwards and probably screwed up the company's reputation. I hate sales, I never wanted to do this cold calling, answering questions type of job. I have been and want to quit. I'm just not that sharp and can react fast, sales is not for me What do you think?

its ok, dont base your feelings of inadequacy with just this one mistake.

the most impt thing is you called up the customer, Im sure he appreciated it.

a lot of successful sales person (or any other successful person) had at one time or another made a mistake.

just be glad it was not a really major mistake that screwed you up big time.

move on and have fun!
It sounds like you made a mistake due to lack of experience; it's embarrassing, but not fatal. The important thing is that you learn something from it. So, perhaps if you cannot find something on the website in the future, ask a co-worker, before telling the customer that you are out of stock. On the big scale, not a major issue. What's important is that you called the customer back and admitted your mistake (covering up or lying would have been orders of magnitude worse).

It sounds like the larger problem is that you're in a job that you do not like. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to be in sales; some people are good at it and thrive in that environment, some do not. It's not a reflection on the person, it's simply a matter of preferences and skills.
It's always best to be honest and if nothing else make fun of yourself for not knowing. Everyone goes through this. Even me after 20 years. I still hate to cold call, I would rather chew my fingers off than call someone on the phone and make nice! So you are not alone. But it will be ok, you're still in a learning curve, give yourself a break. It was good that you called the customer back, you saved face. Good Job!
Sales is presenting the best deal to a buyer..if you do not know your products how can you sell...Take the time to learn your products. If you fall get up and move on, get some hard skin...you really have no cap in sales so if its independence and money your focused on sales is the ticket. Good luck...
