Why is there so much turnover in car sales jobs?

I was thinking about getting into the business. The pay seems good, good benefits. What is the downside that causes so much turnover?

As the wife of a car sales person, i have to say that the two biggest downsides to this job are the long hours and the stress it involves. My husband has been in the car buisness 3 yrs now and his hours are between 12-16 a day which leaves very little family, let alone personal time. If you don't have a family then I guess this wouldn't be a concern to you. The stress can get pretty bad because there is so much pressure to close deals and get so many cars sold in a month, it can be overwhelming. The turnover I would say is due to the same two reasons. New guys always quit because of the pressure or because they don't like not have time to do anything else or they'll get fired because they just aren't cutting it. Aside from these two things, it is a good job, the pay and benefits are really good but if you do have a family, I urge you to talk this thru with your wife and make sure she understands that if you take this job, there will not be much time for ANYTHING else. Good luck.
High stress, little reward. Most car sales agents are rushed by their managers to get more cars sold by any means neccessary. A sane person can only take so much of that over a length of time.
I have been in car sales for three years now and have worked for four dealerships. The hours is one thing. You can develope a grudge with a co-worker very easily when you see them 6 out of 7 days and for 12 hours at a time. Another thing is that if you get in a groove for a couple of months and make good paychecks then have one or two bad months it is easy to quit and go to a different dealership. This is the "Grass is Greener syndrome". Fortunatly I have found the right place to work and have been there for two years now. Also alot of dealers will fire you to bring in new sales people if they feel like you are costing them money. They like new salespeople because there friends and family will buy a car of them and then if they don't succeed, they at least sold a few cars.
there is an incredible pressure to "close the deal". I've heard about dealerships that reguarly hire 2 new salesmen a week, and every week fire the 2 lowest sellers. So have a bad week, or take a sick day and BAM, your canned. This can make salespeople incredibly aggressive in their efforts to sell you a car. Even if your just looking, they will try to "look with you" just incase you decide to buy to make sure that THEY get the sell and not someone else.
