Can A Recent Marketing Grad Start Freelancing?

Can A Recent Marketing Grad Start Freelancing?

Absolutely, positively, yes.

But ....... and this is a BIG BUT ...

You also have to be able to sell yourself, and your skills, very well.

All it takes is one good client to support you. I started off with only one client. I made (US dollars) little more than the minimum wage. But it got me started.

Now, ten years and a dozen more clients later, I make a very good, very good wage.

You can do it. But believe in yourself and be willing to convince someone that your skills are worth their investment. Source(s): 32 years in advertising
You "can" but it won't likely be very fruitful.

You should work for someone else for a while and build a name, reputation, and impressive portfolio. THEN you'll have the creds to back up what you charge and choose what clients you want, etc.

Without a good background and references, clients will very likely choose a reputable firm over you.
Yes, you can.

Ignore those mega firms, or they will ignore you. You won't make the cut into their outlandish standards.

Due to lack of credibility, reputation and experience, you can't charge people according to the market rate. Instead, try targeting the up-starts and smaller enterprises first. They need low cost solutions, and their less notorious businesses don't need the extremely capable freelancer either.

Furthermore, small enterprises would have less red-tape and organizational hierachy. This should give you a better access to their figureheads so that you can influence them with your competency and demonstrations. You'll have a higher probability of success.

You can also build a better long-term relationship with them, as you are indeed a small business, and smaller enterprises tends to support each other againts the giant firms.

Always do follow-ups after completing your business. Requests formal testimonials from them and keep those in a well documented record. Over time, move one level ahead, hoping those satisfied feedbacks will gain the confidence of the larger corporations. All the best!
