What's the difference between marketing and advertising a product?

What's the difference between marketing and advertising a product?

Marketing encompasses advertising but is a larger concept. Marketing is broken into two large areas.

The first area is called marketing research in which one attempts to find out what people want buy and what they are willing to pay for it.

The second area, communications, has to do with telling those potential customers you have what they want, at an acceptable price. That's called advertising.
Marketing is a broad-spectrum process of analyzing the market for a product or service, developing a marketing strategy, budgeting for the marketing campaign, and implementing advertising, store placement, direct sales, and other methods of getting the product or service to the consumers.

Advertising is simply one aspect of a marketing campaign.
Advertising is just one part of the marketing mix, which includes the 4Ps: product, pricing, placement and promotion. Advertising is the promotion part. First you need to know what product to make, how to price it, what sales channels to use and how to promote it.

Simple. Marketing is the overall campaign activity of moving products to customers. Text book definition is 4P's. (They are product, promotion, price, place/channels). So advertising is part of promotion which is part of marketing. Make sense?

How does sales fit it? Sales is activities of taking the orders and processing them. Marketing and Sales work hand in hand.
Well, simply put when you say you are "Advertising" a product it means that you are focused only on promoting it whereas if you say that you are "Marketing" a product. It means that you also look into its prices, packaging, placement and a lot of other things...

remember that in marketing you think about the marketing mix (product, place, price and promotions) usually advertising is considered to be part of promotions where you have your own advertising mix (tri-media, outdoor, etc.)

Hope this helps
marketing is like selling a product while advertising a product is just you want to public it
