I am thinking about going in to accounting after being in marketing a good idea? |
I have been in marketing for 8 years I still have not progressed. I am looking to leave this field. I was in accounting and went into marketing. Accounting is a great field for those who have the temperment and analytical skills. You might ask yourself, what is motivating you to leave marketing? Do you feel fullfilled in what you do? What has kept you from progressing? And, lastly does starting over mean you'll progress that much faster? The proper career choice is the one that when you think about provides you joy. As a professional motivational speaker, I've seen all to often people chose a career for the money only. They generally leave it and go where the fullfillment is greater. If you already have a degree in marketing then you shouldn't have a problem transferring the bulk of the credits to get an accounting degree. If you don't have a degree accounting is still a good field to get into if you can handle the math. With the Sarbanes - Oxley Act accountants are one of the most in-demand jobs. Once you have accouting skill you'll move up based on your skill set. No. Its boring. You will be in tears yes your idea is right. If you enjoy working with numbers then go for it. But you usually don't progress that far in that field either. If you're in the U.S. try going to www.narms.com. They have all kinds of jobs in marketing that pay good with lots of opportunities for someone with your experience for independent contractors as well as the regular ones. The thing I like most about it is the employers go there, tell them what they are looking for and the region. I get offers all the time. I like it because I can make my own hours as long as I get the job done. I have a friend who does 2 part time jobs and 1 reg. full time job she found there. But everyone of them are at her leisure. Try that first before jumping into something else that might be another dead end. Maybe you just need a change of scenery to get out of the rut. I work in accounting and one of the hardest adjustments for some people is the focused, some what 'non-social' environment. I hate to phrase it that way, but for the most part, you'd truly crunch numbers. It is very interesting and you can take breaks to refresh yourself, but ask yourself, can you do that all day? Most marketing people I know crave interaction with other people. Perhaps a relationship manager position would be better? One level of accounting is bookkeeping. Another level is tax preparation. You will need to know some software such as Quickbooks or Mas90. You can take classes at your community college. Since I don't know what sort of marketing or sales you have been doing and don't know your aptitudes, this is hard to answer. "Marketing" depends alot on demographic trends, economic factors like interest rates, new technologies like internet, etc. Wouldn't it be easier to find a new product or service to market?
