What are good promotional skills? |
To promote things such as a band. Being fearless and not taking no for an answer yet still willing to bend and compromise. You must be diplomatic and have the band's best interest at heart rather than your own. MySpace is a great promotional tool, but also have a website. If you need a free one, try Freewebs.com until you can pay for one. Make sure you have demo music available not just on MySpace but your site as well. Always have a business card on hand for the band and if you don't want someone to throw it away, have the band sign it! Don't be afraid to give stuff away and hold contests such as "Want this band to play at your next party? Buy a raffle ticket!" Not only does it promote the band it generates some cash for them and make sure you announce you are giving a certain amount to a charity/organization and follow through!!! Don't just pocket the money. Go to record stores, even new and used record stores, ask if you can put up flyers. But most of all: Have the band's best interest at heart!!! Built Go-Go cages in the 60's. poster radio play concerts giving out cd's passing out t-shirts myspace garage band communication skills, ppl person, great rapport with customers/clients. basically...if you are ppl person and outgoing. you would be afraid to approach a perfect stranger on the street and strike up a conversation sort of skill. the biggest thing you can do is PLAY....go to your local coffee shops, community events -- provide your services for free or for a small fee - get your name out there. Also, you may want to play for some friend's party, parent's gatherings (all depending on the kind of music you play) - use the people around you and it's all by word of mouth - once you start getting your name out there, start making demos, have a website (myspace.com seems to work for artists) good luck |
