Why is scalability important in building an eBusiness IT infrastructure? lets say you start a business with one customer on month 1. your system can handle that 1 customer adequately. lets say six months later your business has grown to i million customers. if your system is scalable, you can make the needed additions to accommodate 1 million customers. the ability to upgrade your system to handle rapid growth is called scalability. if you have a system that can handle a limited number of customer and cannot be enhanced to accommodate growth, such a system is not scalable and would need to be replaced. a non scalable system could be costly to a rapidly growing company, as replacing a system would mean discarding the old system and buying a completely new system. the ibm as 400, now called. i believe, the i 400 is scalable. i think sun microsystem make a number of scalable models. |
