Is marketing and merchandising the same thing? |
if not what is the difference? Yes they are one and the same. Basically it is a series of services performed in getting a product or service from the point of production to the point of consumption. No. Marketing is telling people about your solution to their problem. Merchandising is selling your solution. Marketing is about figuring out WHAT the problem your prospects have, WHO they are, etc. Merchandising is selling what you have. Without marketing, you don't know who to target, with what message, what your solution is, etc. Merchandising is showing off your solution in the best light. http://manygoodideas.com/creativebusines... No, they are not the same thing. Merchandising is a subset of marketing. "Marketing" is the entire set of activites involved in identifying and meeting consumers' needs for good and services. "Merchandising" on the other hand has two different meanings within the marketing and business arena. Firstly, it can mean the physical process and activity of pricing products and placing them on retail shelves. So a merchandiser is the person who works in a supermarket, packing products on to shelves, pricemarking them, returning damages to the storeroom, building product displays etc. There is a second meaning for merchandising in business and that is the process of deciding on the RANGE of products to be stocked in a particular department or store. This is very common in fashion and related markets where the merchandiser will be in charge of deciding the season's range for a particular category (eg. Footwear or childrens' clothing). In this sense, a merchandiser is a sort of retail brand manager. |
