merchandising can mean many things. One meaning is the arranging of stock in order to ensure the the most profit.

Best display of the fastest selling titles or the arranging of items so that certain items will catch a buyers eye.

The advantage is more profit, the only disadvantage that I can think of is, it can require more space and effort to set up. More costs.
