3 accountant questions?

Do they make good money? (average)

How much higher position can you get to by starting out as an accountant?

Im a student going to college to get my BS in business in 2 more years. we basically learn accounting, budgeting, finance, statistics. So im really learning everything. Will this help me?

You probably won't get past Chief Financial Officer, maybe you could make CEO if you are really good. Go to a major CPA firm if you can it won't pay as much to start but much better career move.
I graduated with a BS in Accounting and a minor in Finance. I went to work for a Big 8, now the Big 4, accounting firm. On the audit side not the tax side.

The 5 yrs I spent there were the most productive in my career as far as learning about business. If you went to work for say DuPont, all you will know is how DuPont does things.

Whereas at a big 4 firm, you will be exposed to many companies and many industries. That experience is priceless.

From there you can stay with the Big 4 and try to make partner. Big 4 partners make $300,000 plus. Very good money but the competition is tough and the hours long.

Most Big 4 accountants do not make partner. After 5 years of experience you would be a good candidate for a Controller position at a mid size company. You could also go to a smaller accounting firm, or start your own.

I went to an insurance company for 3 years then left and started a software company and retired at 41.

Anything is possible if you work hard, have determination, persistence. Good luck.

While big 4 experience is great, I found that the best route for me was starting out at a small business. I was able to learn every aspect of accounting. If you go to an accounting firm, you may limit yourself to only learning one particular area. They have sales tax people, federal tax people, merger people, consulting people, etc... Starting at a small to mid-size company will expose you to all areas of managerial and financial accounting.
