Should I have to pay for company calls on my personal mobile phone? |
My boss got annoyed because I took my mobile phone off my email and my internal phone lists. My phone is pay as you go, and I don't want a contract phone. But my work is very busy, and I have needed to make myself more available for calls..including those on my mobile. My company does not pay for payg phones because you can't prove who called you, who you called on business...or how much it cost. Because my living expenses are tight, I am cutting where I can. Should they help out, or are they justified being off with me? It is my personal phone that I have also utilised for work just to make me more of an asset...just the amount of calls and voicemails are out of hand now! This is a common problem these days. Everyone is expected to be available and connected 24/7. Your personal phone is just that - personal. You are under no obligation to provide anyone with your personal number. If your job requires you to be available by mobile phone, then the company should come to some agreement with you. Also, if you're a non-exempt employee (you only get paid for the hours you work and are eligible for overtime), they should be paying you for any time outside of your work hours that they are calling you for business reasons. Explain to your boss that you can't afford a contract phone service, but that if the company would agree to pay for all business calls to your personal phone, you're willing to try to work something out with them. It doesn't sound like they'll provide a phone for you, so you'll have to be creative. most companies wont cover prepaid phones, only contracted ones for - as you said - reasons such as proof of who contacted you and if they really were business related. I hate to say it but its perfectly justifiable what your company did. Not a chance.Your work should provide you with a mobile. If you cannot prove you were making or recieving business calls they have no obligation to pay for the phone calls. You need to come to an agreement with them...my husband and I have terrible credit and his employer wanted him to have a cell phone that employees could contact him on...so they got him a phone and they pay the bill everymonth. He is restricted to business use only so the few times he has made non business calls on it he has had to pay them, but it has worked out really well...maybe you could workout something similar with your company. I would not flip the bill for my work to call me. I just never answer the phone since it uses my minutes. If it is work related they should reimburse you with a portion of your bill or have a prorated amount that they cover. Otherwise suggest they provide you with a company issued phone. Unfortunately your company are right, they can not and you can not prove who you have phones in the business and who outside, you need to go to your manager and say, if you want me to use a mobile phone, then you need to get me one, therefore on contract and you use your personal phone for personal use, or...you put yours on contract? They are ...unfortunately...totally justified in not paying your pay as you go. Another option is to work for the company as a contractor, therefore beoing self employed, this means you can claim back any phone bills (so the pay as you go receipts) against your tax bill at the ned of the year, you can also claim back part of you rent or mortgage if you are working from home, also uniform, travel and computer...etc. Worth looking at if you can do it! |
