Is this a phase...Or, should I be looking for another job? |
I've been working with my stepdad who owns a small business for a little over 7 years. It just the 2 of us working here and I have the ability to run this place. We've talked about me taking it over in like 5 years, then he seems to put it off because he thinks I don't have the "passion" for it. I thought I did, but I just show it differently than he does. I've been thinking, that this will be the only job I've ever had in my life and maybe I do want to try something different. The thing is that I don't want to feel like I'm abandoning him or work. Also, I've been so used to being my own boss that I couldn't imagine starting at the bottom. I'm making about $24K annually, and might max out at about $30K if I stay here. I can't take a pay cut if I go somewhere else. I should be getting my AA in general studies this fall. I love my job, or have I convinced myself that I do? Should I move on, or stick it out? Your step-dad is putting off you owning the business becuase you "don't have the passion." That would tell me that my step-dad really isn't looking out for my best interests. It's so hard to have your own business. I don't think your step-dad is thinking about you at all he's thinking about himself. Some people would say that $24K is nothing. I don't think that way. I say take a look out there and see if you can get a job where you're making $24K that job with your step-dad might start to look better. What is the job? I think you should try working outside of a family business. Family businesses are great, but since you are still young and in school, you have a lot of time to look for other options. I suggest you to try working for a small to mid-sized company to see how you feel about it. What kind of family business does your family own and what did you contribute? If you had a lot of customer service, management, sales, and operational experience you can search for the following positions: Coordinator, Student of Office Affairs, Marketing Assistant, Real Estate Agent (this is more independent and you are your own boss), Consultant (depending on your background), Human Resources, Project Assistant, Management Trainee You can also type in "entry-level" in the search bar. Here are some good job sites: 1. www.dice.com 2. www.indeed.com (one of my favorites, they pull all the local job ads) 3. www.careerbuilder.com 4. www.craigslist.org (good place to look for entry level and part-time positions) Make sure you also have a good cover letter and resume. If you need help building one, you can email me and I can help you out. Good luck! I work in Human Resources. Recruiting Experience. |
