How do I answer the essay question for a clerical/office position? |
I am applying to the school district I live in for the NUMEROUS office positions they have available. But I am supposed to write a short essay (250wrds or less) about why I want to work in education and what work experience I've had with children. I'm in college, so I am barely done with being a child myself and I only want to work at a school because the work hours will allow me to attend MY school at night. I can't say that on the essay so what can I say without completely lying. Here's some info: I mentored elementary school kids when I was in HS as a REQUIREMENT of a course. That's about it other than babysitting relatives. So, What should I write. Always, always always a positive spin... I would say something like because you are still young you understand the importance of an education and you would like to work in an enviroment that will help educatate and the next generation. Definatly mention that you mentored in HS, DON"T mention it was a requirement. It gives the impression you don't care about it. Yes, you can mention babysitting but don't mention it was for relatives. It does't matter who it was for. You were responsible for the health and safety of the child whether it was a relative or not. That's a start anyway. I hope it helps. Good Luck! I'm not doing your work for you. A 250 word essay is 7th grade work. And you're in college? Write something to the effect that you have worked with children in the past...mentoring and babysitting and feel that having worked in these environments, you have gained experiences and insights in regards to how to deal with children. If you have not declared a major, you may say that this will be a method of evaluating the possibility of working the the educational arena as a career... 250 words is NOT very long! I would start with writing about your experience mentoring - write about how you like being a positive influence on children, both directly and indirectly. And I WOULD include that you are interested in pursuing higher education - that is valued in education (I wouldn't say that is the only reason, of course!) But I don't think that will be a mark against you (Just put more emphasis on the first idea.) Best of luck! btw, this answer is 81 words BEFORE this section - you won't have time to write two funny stories that happened while mentoring! (Years in HR) |
