I'm thinking about throwing away a really good job (that I could retire from) so I can chase a dream....?

I'll try to get a job doing something that's comparable in pay but.....nothing is ever guaranteed. I don't know what to do. I just feel like I'm the butt of everyone's joke, I don't feel like I'm part of a team and the work is no longer a passion. I'm so confused as to what to do in life. I want to make others happy but I can't even make myself happy. There's so much to it all that I cannot explain no where near the amount of detail required to let someone understand my situation.

They should call this the endless maze or Yahoo Labrynth, because no matter what one question just leads to more questions and no more answers than what you started with.

Dont kid yourself, there is no such thing as job security these days, there is no loyalty to employees anymore, the good get shown the door with the bad.
You will never make any money working for someone else.
I worked for a large company as a toolmaker for ten years and I had ten years of tangible proof that I was a superior worker with top level reviews, but I got shown the door at the same time as those that had been "retired" since the day they were hired.
Follow your heart. Start your own Enterprise in a field for which you have Passion. (good jobs = oxymoron = no such thing) :o)
Do it now!
Only you can tell yourself what to do, but here goes....

I had a terrific super cushy job with high pay (23 years ago), and threw it away to chase a dream.

I was at my desk, and miserable. I hated my job. I put my hands together and prayed for the job of my dreams, then decided to go for it.

My first paycheck was a joke, but I loved the job. I was extremely nervous about everything and it was so different from what I was in before, that I couldn't fully relate in the right manner because I was seeing everything through my "old" eyes (meaning: from the standpoint of my job and what my friends would think).

Eventually, I started changing into the new me. I had skills in this new area (which to this day I love), and I also had skills from my other 'life.'

My friends told eachother that I missed the other job, and that I wasn't 'complete,' but that wasn't true. They still don't understand, but accept it. They think I threw away a career with a huge salary for a silly dream that I am good at doing.

The truth is that I make more money doing what I do now, because I found a way to legally expand my skills, and although my employer is aware of it, my co-workers don't know. This is because of my previous background which I left.

I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me. Good luck in your decision.

You have to live with yourself 'working' most of your life. Do you want to be miserable all of your working life, or do what you are passionate about, and find the time flying by?
You aren't alone... trust me.

Follow your dream. It is better to try something and fail rather than wonder what if you would have tried it for the rest of your life.

Money is not the only answer. You can always live within your means.

Too many people are just a cog in the wheel, and don't really enjoy life. There's much satisfaction in being your own boss.

If you aren't passionate about your work, you are living a lie.
It's so much easier to get up in the morning when you look forward to your passion.
There might be a price to pay, you figure it out.

Also figure out what you would be willing to do for free, (if you could afford it) then figure out a way to make money from it.

You could end up happier than you ever thought possible.

You don't state your age or where you live, but I'm guessing that you are mid to late 40's ??
A life lived without passion is not a life lived.

If you can afford to do it or find a way to afford it, go for it! I'd hate to be old and be thinking "what if I'd chased that dream?" I'd much rather say, "you know, my life took some crazy twists & turns, but I took some great chances."
