Do early jobs impact you later?

A lot of my friends are getting jobs, and I'm trying too. We're 14-18. Not careers, just money. Some take a flippant attitude, saying they'll quit if they don't like it. I had a job I had to quit because it hurt my wrist and now I'm worried that those three meager months might look worse than no job experience. Thoughts?

The most people that will hire young people 14+ are places like restaurants/fast food, retail stores, malls, etc. Places like this usually have high turnover rates (meaning the amount of people that terminate their employment). Also, most in many low-wage jobs like this, 90 day employment is actually considered about average. You say you hurt your wrist, so I am wondering what kind of job it was that you had.

Quick money is good to have in high school. NEVER, EVER let work come before your school activities or school-related responsibilities. But, throughout your high school career, you may want to have more spending money than in middle school. For example, clothes, you may eventually want to save up for a car, prom, and graduation.

3 months at a low-paying job is good experience, as long as you left in good standing. Don't be like your friends because it's a small world and you never know when you'll need a reference. I am 24 and I worked at a place for only 2 months. At one time I had it on my resume as experience, but more qualifying work trumped this particular job.

So, its cool to have extra cash, but make sure you enjoy the next few years. Study hard.

Best
I am 24 now. I had a few jobs when I was younger. when I graduated highschool and got a fulltime job those few jobs working part time when i was a teen are not on my resume.

They dont mean much of anything because they wont relate to anything you choose for your career path. That is unless you decide to flip burgers forever
Generally speaking, the jobs you have early on (high school and even college) aren't necessarily going to impact you down the road. Let's face it, most likely those early jobs aren't going to be relevant at all to what you wind up doing later in life.

That being said, if you've got a history of being fired for cause or switching jobs very very frequently it can affect hiring decisions.

All in all, I wouldn't worry too much about having short term jobs when you're 14-18. If you're even using them as experience on future applications, potential employers will probably look at them as summer jobs.
Yes, the legal age for employment is 14yrs, you should file for your working papers and get a Social Security number. Social Security is very important especially if you should get disabled some time down the road. Make sure any time you get hurt make out an accident report and have your employer sign it. You will beable to collect Workmens Comp or Social Security. The more you have paid in the more you can collect so yes start early in life because you never know whats going to happen in the future.

Don't worry about it unless,
a) You've been blackballed from your field of expertise.
b) Previous employment lapses are patterned.
So, if you didn't sew someone up after leaving a foreign object inside or this is the third summer you've only worked
three months, don't lose any sleep on job impact.
Don't worry about it. The job was only for three months. Don't put it in your resume or mention it.

Why not go back to school? There are now online courses, which will enable you to get a degree in 2 years while you work. An education is a long-term investment. It will put you in good jobs. It will also give you a lot of self-respect. Money is not everything. There are learning years and earning years. It is generally not a good idea to prioritize work before education. It is like putting the cart before the horse.

Peace and blessings!
