What does a parole officer and social worker do? |
what does a parole officer and social worker do? like what type of occupation for that...and what type of person would be fit for such kinds of jobs? please be specific as possible. muchas gracias~ Parole Officers PROBATION OFFICERS and PAROLE AGENTS have common goals--to protect the public. Both are responsible to assist ex-offenders to adjust to life in a free community and to prevent future criminal acts. These officers work towards returning law offenders to useful, productive lives. The offenders may be on probation or parole depending on their legal status. A law offender who is given a probationary sentence may or may not have served time in a county jail. Once released, the offender is put on probation or county parole, depending on the offense and prior record. Offenders who have served time in a state or federal correctional facility are placed on parole when released. Both types of offenders are given a conditional release under the supervision of a Probation Officer or Parole Agent for a specific length of time. Probation Officers are officers of the courts and in this capacity they perform pre-sentence investigations and prepare reports on their clients. They develop plans to assist their clients return to a free society. They also have the responsibility of enforcing court orders that at times require the officers to make arrests, perform searches, seize evidence, and arrange for drug testing. Parole Agents develop recommendations and plans for their clients before they are released. They arrange for services, such as employment, housing, medical care, counseling, education, and social activities. When a parole violation or criminal behavior is alleged, Parole Agents conduct investigations that can include interviews, surveillance, and search and seizure. They also arrange for drug testing. Social Workers Social workers often work with people experiencing crisis or people who are socially excluded. Their aim is to provide support to enable service users to help themselves. They maintain professional relationships with service users, acting as a guide, advocate or as a critical friend. Social workers work in a variety of settings within a framework of relevant legislation and procedures, supporting individuals, families and groups within the community. Settings include service users' homes, schools, hospitals and other public sector and voluntary organisations. Qualified social work professionals are often supported by social work assistants. They also work closely with other health and social care staff. 禄 Typical work activities Over 50% of social workers work with young people and their families. They may also work with the following groups: young offenders; people with mental health problems; school non-attenders; drug and alcohol abusers; people with learning and physical disabilities; the elderly. Government legislation focusing on the integration of health and social work services means that social workers often work in multidisciplinary teams. Tasks typically involve: undertaking and writing up assessments (often with medical staff), which meet specified standards and timescales; conducting interviews with service users and their families to assess and review their situation; offering information and counselling support to service users and their families; organising and managing packages of support to enable service users to lead the fullest lives possible; recommending and sometimes making decisions about the best course of action for a particular service user; liaising with, and making referrals to, other agencies; participating in multidisciplinary teams and meetings, for example child protection, mental health; maintaining accurate records and preparing reports for legal action; giving evidence in court; participating in training, supervision and team meetings. I have friends who do both roles. Sociology Majors tend to fair well in both roles, but Criminal justice majors also do well as Parole Officers. Hope this helps - good luck!
