Is it time to give up when you keep applying at a company but they never call you? |
I keep applying to this company but they never call me. I am over-qualified for the job but nothing... Even over-qualified applicants need jobs otherwise we wouldnt be applying.... Maybe I should just give up../ Maybe you should...if they aren't courteous enough to respond to applicants, do you really want to work there? Applying for the job, doesn't mean there's A: An opening and B: that you're what they are looking for. My advise is to hold off a bit, rework your resume and check again. Say in a couple of months. I do know what you mean about wanting to work at a particular place. But don't let that stop you from looking elsewhere. You never know what might work for you. Try to get hold of a real person (not voicemail or email) and talk to them. Tell them you know you're overqualified, but you would really like to work for their company. If they brush you off, yes, move on. Are you sending them the same application every time? Take a careful look at your resume, cover letter, and anything else they require, and see whether you can tailor anything so that you look like a better fit for the position (including more of an emphasis on how much you want the job than your qualifications). Try contacting someone at the company in the department you want to work for and ask if they'd be willing to take some time to talk with you about their work and give you some tips on how to be a more attractive candidate. If all of that fails, then you'll know this opportunity just isn't going to pan out. If you are over-qualified I would look for something more for your level. And then agan if they REALLY need somebody they would call. This coorporate world is really shady. Are you applying online? If so, if will probably be a while before you hear back from them.. so many other people are probably applying too and tey have to review all of it. I would fax them a resume in that case, or call and talk to someone. Its good to folow-up u know. I would call the company and ask them why they haven't considered you for a position. If you have applied that many times without calling they should know you. If you are too shy to do that, then maybe your resume isn't that impressive to them, try including a cover letter along with your references. Then a day or two after putting in your resume call them and ask if they got it and if you could come in for an interview. Along with the other good comments, I'd like to add... Are you applying for an actual job? Or are you sending in your resume cold? If you're apply for an open position and they aren't calling you back, you could call them and ask why they passed you over - maybe it's because you're overqualified, but then again, maybe there's another reason that you can work on to change. Over-qualified applicants applying for a lower ranking position are a concern for employers. You have to have an understandable reason for applying for a position below your capabilities (most people go up the career ladder, not down unless there's something wrong) and it has to be one where the employer feels secure in hiring you. Even just needing a job isn't a good enough reason... the employer will think there's a good chance you're going to get bored in the position (because you're capable of more) and start looking for another job, and when a better job comes along, you're gone. Then they wasted their time on you when they could have hired someone else who would've stay in that position for a couple of years. If you're overqualified, you might consider a lateral move in a different field with the help of some new skills (take college or continuing ed classes). Or you might want to completely deconstruct your resume and cover letter... and rebuild it with the help of someone else who can provide fresh eyes & insight. Good luck! |
