Need some career advice please?? |
I had no work experience after college, so not im working as an intern in a research lab and I have a biology degree. The problem is, is that i feel that everything im doing here is TOO easy for me, and I feel that I don't beling here and need to start moving on. This is a great company, pays me well as an intern, they have a muicro lab here but has no openings, and i've worked here for 1 year already, and they are letting me stay here for 1 more year, but my question is: Should I try to wait until a position opens in the micro lab, find a PERMANENT job somewhere else, or just calm down and work here and se if they hire me permanent for the lab (the budget failed the first time, they are trying to work it out next time). But the thing is, if i get hired permanent for the lab, I dont want to be doing the same easy simple stuff here that somebody in highschool can do. The other intern here is STILL in undergrad with a bio/chem degree, he has 1 more year, and they are allowing him to You need to develop your own career plan. Reacting to the "likes" and "dislikes" of your current job is just that - reacting. You need to develop a plan and have goals. Where do you want to be and doing five years from now, ten years from now....after you identify that, determine what you need to do to prepare yourself to meet this goals. Than finally determine how your current assignment helps you to met that goal. If need be, talk to your manager....if you don't know where you want to be in 5 years than thats where you need to start. Good luck Look for another job. It seems as though they don't value your ability. Also there may be a sexual discriminiation issue if he has no degree and is being allowed to do more complex things than you. Has he been there longer? Consider this: Quietly begin to check for employment opportunities in your field with other companys even if means relocating. It is much easier to move laterally to a better company where your potential will be reached, than it is to try to get a job when you are unemployed. For goodness sake, look for another position while you are still employed and have good references. Sounds like it is time for you to be happy and move on. Have you tried talking to whoever is in charge about giving you more responsibility? I found in a previous job I was doing mundane things day in day out and when I eventually left they asked why and i said i was getting bored with doing the same old stuff day in day out and that I knew I could do better things with my skills and they turned around and said well if you had told us we would have given you better things to do. they thought I enjoyed doing what i was doing. But after you talk to them if they can't do anything then I would suggest finding a different employer before you leave. It is easier to get a job when you already have one than finding a job when you are unemployed. I would go ahead and start looking around for a position that offers more of a challenge. If you find something better before your current company gets around to hiring you on pernanently, great. If not, no harm done. Also, if you have done a great job as an intern so far, it's likely your current employer will remember how dedicated your service was when they begin hiring for a permanent position. Continue to stay in thouch with co-workers who could be used as references later on (networking). There's really no harm in looking. |
