Should companies adopt the flexible work day model?



A department in Best Buy Corporation has adopted the flexible work day policy where employees are free to come and go as they please. The constraints of 9-5 are done away with, but all that is required is that projects get finished on time.

its a good model, I have worked for companies with that policy before and it was beneficial to everyone, however, someone does have to be bound to certain hours to ensure that all business hours are covered and the customer will not suffer.
While this model works great for certain professions i.e. those based on task orientation. It wouldn't really work well if everyone was allowed to do this would it?

I mean you go to the store and no one is there. Or you call your lawyer and get an answering machine...okay this is a bad example but you get the point.
I really enjoyed it when I was promoted to my new workplace, which has flextime. Basically, we can begin work anywhere from 7am to 9:30, and just have to work 7.5 hours, not including lunch. However, I have seen many coworkers try to get around these requirements to leave work even earlier, e.g. not take a lunch, take lunch "at the end of the day",or sign out of work later than when they are actually leaving work.
On the other hand, flextime is good for doctor's appointments and taking care of errands during the day, if you can leave and then come back to work and not have to use any sick time or vacation time.
So I would say that at most work sites, a flexible schedule is a worthwhile thing to have, but procedures have to be in place so that people don't take advantage of it. I suppose if an employee is a higher-up-level administrator, he/she could truly have a salaried position where they do not have a set number of minimum hours to work, but for most employees, I think you will lose some productivity because they will do a few tasks and then leave early, if that is what they can get away with!

It depends on which areas you work. If you are on help desk, sales or other work that require contact with the customer, you must adhere to certain workhours, or also if you're somewhere that you share workspaces with someone else.

And, also, it's hard for most of people to really be disciplined enough for this work.
It is good if it is a company where it will work.
