How best to handle misdemeanor financial fraud durring a job hunt?

I was plead guilty to misdemeanor financial card fraud in 2002 and it is really hampering my hunt for a new job. I had a work study job with the school I just graduated from and was blocked from being employed full time recently becouse of the conviction after having worked in the same job with very high review scores and being well liked by co-workers and students. I have really changed my life around in the last two years while getting my Associate's Degree but I cant seem to get past my past. Basicly I used to be a bum and am afraid that if I dont find a job soon (been out of work since May) that I will start falling back on my old ways as a I get desperate. I dont want to go back to shop lifting and other stuff to make money but Im desperate. So my question is how best to deal with my past when looking for a job. I dont want to lie about it but if I dont I dont even get a second look. Any advice?

you cant lie . because they will still find out. just say the truth BUT also say that it was a long time ago, that you inderstand it was a mistake , that you learned so much from it and that it will never happen again. say you take full responsibility for it.
