A quiet office. Too quiet?

What to do? If I talk to people (and I have) then I look like the office timewaster. Starting conversations wears me down after a while.

Hmm. What industry do you work in? Are you in a busy, fast-paced office where there is always work to be done, a project to be finished, and a deadline to be met? Where the staff is overworked and underpaid, and it's laborious to just stay above water? Where no one is truly happy, they just await the end of the day? If management is unreasonably piling demands on people, that could be the reason why people aren't eager to talk- they are just trying to keep up.

What age group do you work with? Are you the youngest among your colleagues? Is there a huge age gap among you and everyone else? Perhaps that explains the lack of conversation.

Let me back up - how long have you been at this company? If you've been there for less than a year, you probably don't really know the inner workings of the office. Yeah, you've got a routine, but truly knowing why people behave as they do is another thing. If you're a newbie, you won't know who to trust, who is gossipy, and who you can trust.

Is there a lot of gossip and drama where you work? Maybe that has caused people to retract and not communicate. Or maybe there is a slavedriver manager that makes people afraid to talk to each other.

If you are anything like me, you feel very unfulfilled after spending a long day at an office where there is no real interaction with people. I recently found this out for myself. There is a big difference between having a job and having a career. Consider if your job is truly a career. Is it? If not, then what do you really want to be doing?

If it is the industry you wish to stay in, then are people in this line of work generally not geared toward conversing with one another? Have you worked at another company in this line of work, or have you considered that another company in this industry might be different? Finally, a very, very, VERY radical possibility - not to be said yes to on a whim - have you ever considered starting your own business?

Good luck to you. Source(s): Clockwatcher, cubicle dweller, moneysaver.
