Asking for a raise...?

Hey, I work part-time (only 18) at an alarm company where I basically monitor various alarm signals on a computer. I'll be working there 3 years come this October and I've been making minimum wage since I started (current 7.15 in NJ) with college coming up I plan on asking for a raise, only thing is I aint sure how much to ask for. Any suggestions?

Ask your boss (who ever gives out the raises) when you are entitled to receive a raise. Explain that you have been there for 3 yrs. without a raise and that you have been dependable, honest, hard working, etc. and never complained about the wages before. Tell him you are starting college and could use the extra money. (Tell him all this ONLY oif it is true.) If you are in the habit of calling off more than once every 2 months, they will look at your record and say, "Well. yes, you do deserve a raise, but you havent shown us to be dependable, etc. as yet. and until you do, forget the raise." or if there hasd been any complaining or anything. In other words, have you showed up every day, did your job well, kept your mouth shut, caused NO trouble, etc. If so...ask and dont settle for less than 50-75 cents an hr more or even a dollar more per hr. If they cant give you a raise, ask about some other type of benefit available for loyal employees like pd vacation and health ins coverage for free or dirt cheep.
just say look I've been here for 3yrs now and now I'm going to start college and i will be having more expenses is it possible for you to give me a raise I never asked for one before because it wasn't necessary but now i really need it. Tell him u think u deserve it and have proven that ur worthy.
I wouldn't normally ask for a raise of more than a dollar or so with a part-time job, but if you've been there for nearly three years and you haven't received one...you deserve it! I would ask for a couple of dollars and see what he says. Whatever you decide to ask for, be sure to ask for an additional 50 cents or so. That way you have some room to negotiate if you need it. Good luck!
Have you been making the same minimum wage since you started? The Federal Minimum wages just went up. Is NJ that far ahead of the government?

When asking for a raise, years of service do not equal more money. If the company can hire someone new off the street and train them to do the job in a couple weeks, why should they pay the incumbent more? Therefore, you should be prepared to explain why you think you can do the job better than you did it three years ago. Are there any examples of saving the company money because you are more familiar with the system? Are there examples of how your knowledge of the client base saves the company money or enhances their service. These are the things that will earn more money.

Take a look at your job from this prospective. Prepare three or four talking points. If possible put a dollar value on them to show how you save money for the company or enhance product value. Take these to the boss. I would never give somebody a raise because they need more money. Everybody needs more money.
