What's you experience with working with temp agencies? |
I started working with ACT-1 in Dec 2006. I was impressed they had an assignment ready for me when I got hired. I was told by the temp I would be working for a notable publishing company as a temp-to-hire. My schedule was Mon-Thurs 8AM-6PM and I received a weekly paycheck. When I when to work at this publishing company there were at least 40 other temps. Some of the temps were told they temp-to-hire others were told they to complete the assignment in 3mos. I really enjoyed working there because I had alot of experience working in the customer service field. When I was at my third month of working at this company I was told that the temp-to-hires would be considered for permanent placement at the company six from the date we were hired, which was great because this company is a Forrtune 500 company. Anyway, while there the other temps found out that was untrue because some of the other temps have been there for at least a year and still was not hired permanent. I have registered with several temp agencies and to make a long story short, they are really ridiculous, they promise you jobs and get your hopes up high but never succeed at what they promise. I recommend to everyone do not deal with temp agencies, they only offer you jobs because they get a percentage of the money when you sign up with them and while you're working. My advice is to go directly to different companies and apply, you'll get all of your monies worth Being considered for permanent hire means just that, that you'll be considered. Usually there are fewer spots to fill for permanent positions then they are of temp-to-hire people, so only the most qualified get the positions when they open up. The most qualified person isn't necessarily the person who has worked there the longest, so the newer people might get the position first or instead of. Since some of the temps have been there for awhile without gaining a permanent position, then at least they know they are valued as a worker (since they've been kept on) even if they aren't considered the best for a permanent job with the company. Sounds as if the company is hesitant to hire permanent employees. Probably wants the flexibility of being able to change staffing arrangements at a moments notice. Your agency is just interested in keeping the customer happy. You should find another agency and keep sending out those resumes. I've used temp to hire positions on a couple of occasions...never had so much trouble as you describe. I worked for temp agencies years ago, and enjoyed it. I did a temp to hire, was hired then immediately quit because thing were so different. Some temp agencies offer benis such as health insurance. Does yours? If so, take it. Also, you cannot apply at the co where you work for at least a year of working there thru the temp agency. If a perm job is important, go get one. One thing I like about temp agencies is the flexibility, but working at a location like you are means you loose the flexible schedule (taking time off, etc). Not sure this was any help, sorry. |
