I'm looking to change careers at age 42, any ideas?

I have experience in sales, management, retail, restaurant, truck driving, radio, some accounting. I have very little college under my belt, no degree. I currently do oilfield hotshot with my own truck and trailer, I have been doing this for a little over a year. Prior to that I drove an 18 wheeler over the road with a friend of mine. I have a family and would like to get away from driving as it keeps me away from home for too long. Would really like a M-F job so that I can be home evenings and weekends. I do need to make at least $50K yr. Please, serious answers only. I've poured over job sites for the last couple of years to no avail. Thanks for your help in advance.

Given your skill base and job history I see only 1 area listed that would enable you to make $50k and that is sales.

The following observations are based WITHOUT knowing what sector of the country you live in -- and that can be a significant factor in your entry pay into other careers.

Unless you have very strong management skills backed by verifiable job references I don't see you starting at a $50k salary initially, unless you are a darned good chef and can find an upscale restaurant the same applies here, same with media entry positions and they don't pay much (they do have sales but you can't make a heck of a lot unless it is a really dominant one and can draw big ad contracts).

Have you thought of becoming a nurse or other health care professional --- it will mean going to college and getting certified but it is not normally a 4 year course. Other thoughts are (I live in Florida) and the lawn maintenance guys do very well --- that is both the guys with their own lawn mowing business and the pest control technicians, they also have sales reps in the pest side of the business.

Good luck.
I'd recommend real estate, but then again I'm biased. My experience was in sales, security, factory work, and corrections [prison guard], and this is the first job I've really felt like I was in control of and able to go places with. It's also one of the only things in my area that allows you to earn a decent income without a college degree.

It does cost some money to get into [about $500-$100 for school, and then at least $2000-3000 to start], and you'll need some money to live on for the first several months, until the commissions come in, but it is a great career once you get past the first couple months.
