I'd like to be a writer, but I need to come up with a back-up career...?

My dream is to become a well-known writer like J.K. Rowling, but I doubt that it will be easy. I won't give up on my goal though. But even if I do get published, there's always the risk that I would not make enough money as a writer alone.

I'd like to study creative writing in college and obtain a degree in English. But are there any stable jobs related to English? I dislike journalism, by the way, and teaching doesn't pay well. I would appreciate any ideas you might have. Thanks!

Hello, Em. I answered your last question. I want to add one more detail, in case you don't check back on your question. (I left a comment there.)

In finding Japanese martial arts, you can also check out rec centers, YMCAs, cultural centers, community centers, etc. Often they will host martial arts programs for much cheaper than what you'd find in a "regular" school-- ie., the ones you'd find in the phone book. Iaido and Kendo are actually pretty popular, so maybe you need to look just a bit harder.
Try a Internet search of your local city and the martial art's name. Usually, if there are classes, it will be listed SOMEWHERE online.
For instance, if I wanted to take capoeira (a Brazilian art similar to breakdancing) I wouldn't find it in the Milwaukee phone book. But if I do an internet search of "Milwaukee Capoeira" it will show college clubs, cultural center programs, etc., that aren't listed in the phone book.

Now, as long as I'm here, I might as well answer your question. :-)

Outside of teaching and journalism, I don't think you have many options for a regular-paying job that involves writing. True, teaching may not pay well, and you may not enjoy journalism, but they will probably pay enough to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head. You can bring in extra money by writing articles/short stories for magazines, newspapers, etc., but that would probably be very competitive.

The thing is, you won't always have ideal jobs available, and there won't always be jobs in what you want to do. You have to be realistic and willing to do what it takes to make the house and car payments.

You may even have to take a job at Taco Bell's, if that's the only place that will hire you.

To put it in perspective, I want to be a film director. But I would be a fool to think that I could jump straight from college to filmmaking. I'd have to start at the bottom and work my way up, and probably work more than one job at a time to eke out a living. It's very likely I'll end up at a job I hate, but if that's what brings in money, OK. It's just one more rung on the ladder.

And, you don't *need* a college degree to make a living, although it certainly helps. My father didn't finish his; and he has always provided for us just fine. Bill Gates dropped out of college; now he's one of the world's richest men. And the man who founded Cousin's Subs (or was it Subways?)started his business while he was in high school. Source(s): If you have any more concerns about making money, I suggest you read one of Dave Ramsey's books, or Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. They will tell you how to invest your money and make a secure living for yourself.

Teaching can pay well, depending what you are teaching, where you teach, and what degree you have. You can also write plays, speeches, or be a personal tutor for student struggling in english class. Good luck, and don't give up!
