What are some ways to differentiate yourself in public accounting?

I just finished my first year in the audit practice at a Big Four firm. This sounds nerdy, but I absolutely love it! Despite the long hours and the horror stories that everyone had told me, I have been pleasantly surprised and genuinely enjoy my clients, the fast-pace environment, the different industries, working in teams, and the technical accounting issues. There are definitely some less exciting parts of the job, but I feel that the benefits significantly outweigh those things. I don't know if I want to go the partner route, but I am really looking forward to being an audit senior in a couple of years. However, I have found that it is tough to differentiate yourself at a Big Four firm because almost everyone here is highly motivated and an overachiever. That said, I was curious if anyone with experience out there had any advice for someone who is relatively new to the public accounting industry. What can a second-year auditor do to stand out?

Continue doing what you're doing. It's the well honed knowledgebase, passion and discipline that become impressive to higher-ups; and, serves you well, as you progress.

This may sound off-topic, but there is very relevant advice I was just reading from a FAQ page of a bio from Nancy Cartwright. It started out as curiosity, but this ended up as a useful reference. Source(s): http://www.nancycartwright.com/html/abou...
