Undermining my authority?

I am the Deputy Manager at a Hotel Restaurant, My Manager is at the moment of sick, and will be for another couple of months, my Bar Manager is becoming increasingly unbearable to work with, when I am not on the premises she walks around like she owns the place, this was told to me by some customers, her husband the gardener answers the phone, and sits at the bar what I think all day, as when I turn up he is always at the bar with a drink.. She talks to me with utter contempt and has no respect for me. She undermines my authority.. what do think... I feel she is pushing me out of my position, she is lazy, has a cigarette break every ten minutes... I have been told by various customers that she is after the restaurant and hotel for herself... what do you think.. all replys welcome but only serious ones...

i have been in this position for almost 2 years so i can honestly relate to this-and this was done who wasnt my boss (but had just been allowed to believe she was) it will drag you down and shatter your confidence please dont let it carry on hun-speak to someone higher up or your union rep its workplace bullying-i have now found a new job as i was heading for a nervous breakdown-good luck x
Give her a carefully considered responsibility, one you think she may not fully complete without learning something new and having to try very hard...and then she will be back in her place.
Hi, I am not sure what a deputy manager is but if the manager that's off sick is your superior then talk to him/her about it.

Off sick doesn't mean the person cannot be contacted.

That's the thing when you work for someone, you always have a superior to talk to as opposed to when you are your own boss and in that case you could probably sack the person and her husband.
incompetence is a sack able offence
tell her what you have told us and you are not very happy with her work.and tell next time she will be getting a written warning.good luck.
Best Idea would be to call your manager who is off i'll and ask to bend his ear. Failing that go see someone higher than that to get a clear idea of where you stand and what action you can take. You need to be strong.

Try directly asking her to do something and see what happens. If she does as she is told do it more often. If she refuses or says she will and does not ask to have a chat with her to clear the air.

But I think talking with someone higher up might be best.

hope that helped iv'e been in a similar situation because I am asked to run the store without any real position.
Sounds to me like she wants your job and feels like you don't deserve your position. If you have a higher authority than she does I think it's time to start recording a log of customer complaints and situations that you have witnessed and take that to your manager if you can or if they are unavailable forward it to corporate.

Actually with what you describe it sounds like in your chain of command she would be the temporary boss if you weren't there so she's not really out of line controlling employees while your gone. The solution to that would of course be there more often. Her husband sitting at the bar is an easy fix though. Tell him he'll be fired the next time you come in and see him at the bar... Gardeners are a dime a dozen and I'm sure you have an employee break room where he should be taking his breaks.
