Question for those of you who have had at least one major career switch? |
what was your previous career and what do you do now? how did you decide what career to move on to...was it an immediate change or did it happen slowly? what were your influences? (please no teenagers telling me they made career switches from working at wal mart to waiting tables) Here's the short version, Bruce I was in the entertainment business -- had played bass guitar with a fairly popular group when we went 'belly up' in contract disputes -- had an opportunity to move into the Booking business and entertainment management which I did until the business became RACKED with people who didn't give a damn about the music -- just the money -- it became cut throat and VERY unfun to be around !! I had loved photography and messed with it a lot for years as a hobby -- while in the booking business I began taking Promo Photos of a lot of the entertainers that I worked with -- it had become a THING with me during that time and I even was called on to do a lot of OTHER stuff for people with the camera ----- When I made the decision to leave the entertainment thing --- photography was the only thing I could think of that I had left in my life (outside of music) that meant anything at all to me -- so, I decided to give it a whirl --- that was almost thirty years ago at this point -- and I couldn't have made a better choice if I had had directions printed out for me !! It has been a miracle ride !! Back to something that my Grandfather once told me --- pick something that you LOVE --- give it everything you have --- and the money and a good deal of success will hunt YOU down !!! He was a gem among men !!!!!!! I was previously an elementary education teacher. I am now an attorney. I majored in education but I took the LSAT my last year of college kind of as a back up plan. If I could not get a good teaching job I was gonna go to law school. I ended up getting a good teaching job but I also got a good LSAT score. So I taught full-time and went to law school on a full scholarship part-time. It took 4 years total. This September will be my 1st year anniversary as an attorney . I really enjoyed teaching but in FL they do not pay well at all and the education system has low standards. I had to use my own money constantly to go above and beyond what was demanded of me and really engage and teach my students. I could not see myself teaching forever in FL. My law degree was basically free so it would've been a waste to not at least try it out. I really enjoy law and feel as if I have made more of a difference in 1 year than I did 4 years teaching. I can make a decent living and the opportunities are endless. my life My background was in the pottery industry and I was with a company for 20 years until my early forties, then one Monday morning I was asked to attend a meeting where I was told we don't want you anymore, don't bother to go back to work. This was a major shock as I had not only moved the complete business to a brand new factory but had also built it into a major tourist attraction. Was unable to get another job in the industry, spent a year trying, so I went self employed manufacturing concrete garden ornaments. Through that business I got asked to become Operations Director of a company manufacturing a sand stone product, by now I was in my early fifties. This company survived for 7 years but unfortunately was forced into receivership, now in my late fifties. But just before this company failed I was to meet the President of a network marketing company which was just about to enter the European market place, before that meeting I was not interested in the Networking industry, but this gentleman changed my mind and I am now totally committed to a business that very recently had been endorsed by Donald Trump. I am now in my sixties and have at last a business which really can make a difference to anybody. I can be contacted through my 360 profile. |
