Has anybody ever skipped a day of work!? |
Hey guys...I'm kinda scared because I got hired at a clothing retail store about a month ago...showed up to each day on time and did my work....but lately some stressful stuff has taken place (with girls--I'm 17 years old), and I guess it got to me. I was scheduled Saturday (yesterday) at 8 AM to 2 PM. I thought that I was scheduled for TODAY at 8 AM, so yesterday I didn't show up, and when I woke up today and went there, the manager was like..."Are you scheduled today?" And I was like, "Yep, 8 to 2". She then proceeds to tell me that it was yesterday and that it's OK that I didn't show up, just next time make sure to get the schedule right....but I'm still sort of scared. I'm the youngest person that works there, and I don't really need to jeopardize my position. I really don't know what the heck happened.....some words of comfort? Jeez you really messed up. The manager is going to remember that for a pretty long time especially since you're young and a new hire. Try to be the perfect employee for the next 3 months. DO NOT miss a day of work and arrive at least 10 mins early every day. Good luck! you'll be fine. just try not to make it a habit. they could hold a grudge if you keep it up and fire you. forget about the other girls. you should worry more about getting to know the people coming in and spending their money. these girls are probably older than you and still stuck in a retail job. the customers are not stuck Everyone's played hooky from work in their time. But you have to learn to separate home life with job life. That is the key to keeping your job. Also, if you do miss ONE day, don't ever give the bosses more info than they need to know. Your home life is your business. As long as you don't bring those feelings to work. Don't worry about it, get a large calender and post your schedule. Make a habit of looking at the calender in the morning and again at night. If you were really needed at the store on that day, they could have called you. everything will be fine. if your boss says it's ok, then just move on. i know you may be feeling a bit disappointed with yourself, but i think almost everyone who has ever had a job has made that mistake. i know i did! next time just make a copy of your work schedule and maybe keep it on your refridgerator as a reminder....:-) as far as your stress goes.....you really have to learn to grow a thick skin and just ignore people. haters are everywhere :-( You don't need words of comfort......you need someone to inject some common sense into your head. You don't miss work for 'girl stuff'......you never miss work, you only miss work when you are so sick you can't get out of bed.......I am a boss and I will fire anyone who doesn't take their job seriously, get to work late or miss work for no good reason. You were wrong. When you miss work like that without warning anyone not only do you put your boss in a difficult position but also all your co-workers who have to cover for you. You better learn right now the importance of being a good employee. First off, do your best to make sure you're not late anymore. If your manager didn't fire you after your mistake then you're probably okay, you just don't want to make a habit out of being late or absent. Also, many retailers have what they call a probation period where they can fire you within the first 30-, 60- or 90-days if you're late or absent without a really good reason. But talk with your boss, let them know that there are some stressful things going on in your personal life - if you don't want to divulge details then you don't have to - and see how he or she reacts. If you're upfront and honest then more often then not they will give you some slack. One thing to keep in mind is that a job is just a job, there are certainly things in the world and in your life that are far more important. Sure, everybody likes to have something to fill up the hours in the day, and everybody like to make money and feel like they have a purpose, but if you lose this job there will be another to fill it's place, and you can always start over fresh if you need to. |
