What is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a response after an interview? |
I went for an interview more than a month ago. I was told after inquiring (I hope that doesn't reflect badly on me) that "no decisions have been made yet". I have never had a prospective employer wait that long, is this normal? I think it is inconsiderate to make people wait that long. I want the job, but obviously I am interviewing and looking at other places too. I think it's terribly rude of them not to have gotten back with every interviewee within 1 week, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I never understand how they expect people to spend money (gas, dry cleaning, time off current job) and time (prep time, drive time, loss of work time) to come talk to them about a job that they need filled, yet don't even take a minute to pick up the phone and tell them if they got the job or not. It's utterly rude. That being said, one job I got was at a company where I called the day after, a week after, and then subsequently every 3 days or so to express my continued interest and to see if they had made a decision. After 5 weeks, after several phone messages, e-mails, etc, I finally got the guy on the phone and he offered me the job. Sometimes the best candidate is simply the most eager person to do the job! Show them you're eager! -Michael Some companies don't respond at all. I have heard that the best thing to do is to make a follow up call or send a thank you card a few weeks after the interview. I think if you don't hear back over a month, you probably will never hear from them. I was going to say a week, if it's been a mth I'm guessing you didn't get the job i'd say a couple weeks. dont lose hope after, though. you might of been one of the first to interview and they're completing the whole process with other candidates. Someone else got the job. It is reasonable to wait several day - perhaps up to two weeks, depending on the position, but most of the time you'll know quickly if your in contention. Sorry, but find another opportunity. A month ago? I would move on. Do you want to work for a company that takes that long to make a decision? I wouldn't. It's rude and unprofessional not to have at least sent you a response. Usually companies get back to you quickly. It's been my experience, if it's been a month, they probably won't call. One important thing to remember is to send them a thank you note the same day or the next, thanking them for concidering you and taking the time to meet with you. Sometimes that is the one thing that tips the scales in your favor. When I was hiring, I always looked at the people who sent thank you notes a second time. |
