What's the best way to get started in a journalism career?? |
What's the best way to get started in a journalism career?? If you're in high school or college start writing for your school's newspaper. It's a good place to get experience and network. It's harder to get your foot in the door with local newspapers without experience - even if you want to freelance you need experience. You don't need an english degree, mine didn't open any doors for me in journalism. Major in journalism itself and get a bachelors in journalism. An English degree Take journalism courses in college. Get a degree and don't watch FOX news. It depends whether you are thinking newspaper journalist or news journalist; if its the former you are going to need skills in writing so tertiary education in that area is a good start, also any work you can get working for a local paper, magazine or even a website will get your foot in the door. If it is the latter you are after, writing journalism is a good start but you really need to pick a specialisation (ie: politics) and know it inside out; a qualification in this area would really help. With both ways, tertiary qualifications in journalism will benefit greatly. I suppose the extent to which you wan tto train yourself depends on where exactly you want to end up ultimately in the journalism world (what kind of salary are you after or would you rather go freelance?). If you are into writing, you can make money doing it even writing short pieces. You can get a referral from me for a site that I write for by going to this link: http://www.associatedcontent.com/join.ht... Personally, even though I did go to school to get an English degree, I've learned more by just writing and seeing what editors really like. Once you know that, you can go into newspaper journalism, magazine feature writing, webzines, or whatever! Hope this helps. http://lynnfo.blogspot.com |
