Career advice please..? |
I'm 19 and currently studying Human Movement Science at University. However recently I've been thinkin of starting an apprenticeship in carpentry/joinery. I'm sick of not having money at uni and would prefer to learn and earn. I've even though of the services. anybody have any advice? stick to one and dedicate yourself to it. don't try working and studying at the same time, because it's hard on you and on your grades. if you can take out loans to help you get that degree then do it, the future value to you is enormous compared to the debts you will take on now. the most important thing for you is a solid education where you can have a degree to show to society that you are educated and can take on responsibilities. the service is a great place, if you are thinking about joining think of the coast guard, navy, or airforce. army and marine will ask for more from you, where you might have to serve in Iraq at the front line. don't think or stress too much about money, once you get that paper that says you have finished school, i'm talking about your bachelors, then doors will open to you. make sure your grades are above 3.0 gpa. anything else, that piece of paper will be just that, a piece of paper that shows nothing about your potentials. I am not sure what human movement science is, but it sounds a little like ergonomics and I don't know what the job opportunities are for folks in that field. If money is your concern, stay in college but pick a field where the skills are more in demand in the market. What do you like? Pharmacists are in big demand as are nurses, physician assistants, occupational therapists, people w/ financing backgrounds, teachers, - lots of things. Statistics are clear that folks w/ a college degree make A LOT more than folks w/out one so suck it up for a few years, live in the dorm or w/ a roommate and know that in five years this will all be in the past. I would not recommend the service unless you want to take a bullet in the head. The odds are pretty bad right now for that "career". Good luck. I assume that you have given this some thought! In the long run a college degree will probably net you more cash. Construction work is usually outside in the extreme seasonal conditions and sometimes the work is mundane or backbreaking. You can become a carpenter by working through a union apprenticeship which will probably require after work schooling. Or you can go the merit shop route and work as a helper until you learn the trade. There is a limit to how proficient you can become with OJT training only. A degree from a trade school would give you a leg-up. Military service is a good way to learn a trade if you don鈥檛 end up in the infantry. Not much demand for foot soldiers in the civilian world. A career in the infantry is not bad but you want get rich. http://brassmein.com http://g23.proboards106.com/ |
