Does anyone know about pre employment credit checks?

I am aplying for a job with an insurance agency. I think I got the job because we agreed on pay and I recieved study guides for my state exam. But he did mention a credit check. Which worries me, I just got a new car last year so it not that bad. I have never filed for bankruptcy, or had any kind of repos or foreclousures. But have been delinquent in the past on credit cards. I have a cell phone bill that went into collection and some medical bills. ANyone know what they are looking for, or how strict they can be?

In response to a couple of the answers here, one thing to keep in mind is that Background Checks vs. Credit Checks are two different things...

Credit checks are run for two reasons:

1) In cash handling or financial (i.e. accounting) positions, they want to see your overall credit worthyness to assess your potential for fraud, theft, etc... (but still can't make too harsh of a judgment - that's what criminal background checks are for)

2) In financial & insurance institutions, they want to see your overall credit worthyness AND make sure you don't have any outstanding debts to any of their major customers (where you could potentially manipulate your own account).

For employer credit checks, they CAN NOT see your actual credit score. Typically, they will only fail you on credit based on MAJOR derogatory history, i.e. not only bankruptcy, but looking to see if you continued to not pay your debts even after a bankruptcy.

Most employers who review credit, also know that medical is an area that hits a lot of people and we tend to disregard.

You are probably fine. You just need to concentrate on passing the exam!!! Good luck! Source(s): Years of exp in HR
They're looking for any major credit problems; a few late payments and a small collection won't be a problem--unless they have very strict regulations.
Credit checks are to verify previous employment, and little else. That way they can really tell if you actually DID work at Chuck E Cheese's for 10 years. And the only thing previous employers will do if they inquire into previous employment is to say that you are a former employee and whether or not you are eligible for rehire.

Good luck if you got the job!
your employer will look for financial instability--it's a good indication of personality and character. As long as you dont have any charge offs/filed for bankruptcy, you should be fine. You might need to explain the past delinquencies on your cards though. maybe come up with an excuse--you were illed and thats why you overlooked your finances. or you were in college, etc.
I don't know; the last insurer I applied to required that I provide a balance sheet. It's highly regulated, but good luck. I'd also get a free credit report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com...
