Should I say something? |
I have gone to two job interviews with the same employer, a big financial institution. The first interview with the head of HR went really well, and she told me that she would recommend me to the hiring manager for a second interview. I had my second interview this last Friday at 4pm. During the interview the interviewer gave me great feedback, and told me that she would make a decision within two to three weeks. However, after the interview at 5:15pm I received a canned email notifying me that the job I had just interviewed for was already been filled by someone else. I think that it may be sent to me by mistake, but I am not sure. I thought about asking the hiring manager but you know many times we don't tell people to their face when we don't like them. The canned email was sent by the person who first interviewed me. Should I ask? Who? Or should I simply ignore it and send a thank you note to the last interviewer. What is the most pertinenent thing for me to do in this case? Talk about trying to confuse the job candidates! I'm curious to read other suggestions. I don't think it would hurt to contact the first person you interviewed with (and the person who sent the email) and 1) thank him/her for the interview, 2) ask about the position being filled... explaining that you were told a decision would be made in 2-3 wks., but immediately following your 2nd interview, you received the position-filled notification and you wanted to follow up and find out what you could have done (or do) to make you an ideal candidate for their organization. Basically, in the conversation, you're assuming the email was correctly sent, but it offers the HR person a chance to tell you what happened (if he/she chooses to offer an explanation - he/she probably won't). If it's a mistake, that should jiggle the tree a little. Lastly, it gives you a little feedback (assuming they are honest) to tell you where you can improve. Good luck! |
