Is the "objective" still neccessary in resumes? |
I am using Resume Maker and all the templates don't have any objectives. My former temp agency also told me to remove the objective. I need your honest advice. I use them and I do to an extent think they're necessary. One thing that I find useful with them is that it allows the employer to see exactly what you're looking for. An objective like this: "Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills" does nothing for the employer. Something like this: "Seeking a challenging position as an administrative assistant in which I can use my strong interpersonal and organizational skills to be a company asset" shows 1. What you want and 2. How you can be valuable to the company. Using or not using an objective, it's up to you. I personally think they're good to use but I just may be an idiot. Haha. One thing you could do is go to the company that you are trying to get hired at and talk to some of the people there. You could ask them questions about what type of resumes are they interested in. You can ask them questions about the interview too. Try and talk to someone that works in the Human Resources department. IMHO, and every resume that comes across my desk still has an objective. Your resume objective is the first thing employers will read -- make sure it's captivating! Your resume will be first scanned for only a few seconds. Your resume objective must capture them and sell them a value. I think that most resumes still use the objective line. Make sure that yours is not the generic one that gets overlooked. A snappy and eye catching one will draw the employer in to look at you further. Use one, but make it work for you. Good Luck. |
