Career Change: Should I stay or should I go? |
I am currently a temp at company X. I am supposed to start a full-time position at company Y this week. Company X wants me to stay on as a temp for another month while they fire someone else to free up space in the budget. I have to work with this person for the next month, and I don't know how I feel about stealing someone's job out from under them. I have also heard many promises like this in the past that did not pan out so I am hesitant to commit to anything untill I see it in writing. Is this a standard practice or do a lot of companies promise the moon and the stars when you are walking out the door? I say go. I've been in a similar situation. The company I was leaving couldn't promise in writing that I would have that position when the other person was "booted". So, I left for what turned out to be a much better job, closer to home. I went for it. It was the worst first day ever. Morale was really low and I got the feeling the turnover was really high. I decided it wasn't for me and went back to my other job the next day. If you have a solid lead or offer at another company, take it. Of course they'll promise you the world and then not deliver if it means making their life easier. If they want you that badly, they'd hire you now. If they have budget issues, do you really want to work with them? Go to the other company. I'm sure you won't regret it. Whats to stop them from firing you later on to free up space for the next guy? It doesnt take a month to do that either; go with company Y because of company x really wanted you they would just hire you. they would have done so a while ago if they truly wanted you. Good Luck in your new position. Weigh the pros and cons of the two jobs and make sure to keep in mind that this company is willing to fire someone like its no big deal. Ethics. Go for company y. Full time is a great opportunity. Why look like the bad guy stealing someones job for budget cuts????? If you are having to ask if you need to stay or go you are obviously not happy with where you are so don't stay, GO! Adia |
