A job asked for my References on Thursday. How long should I wait before following up?

Why delay? Why not "immediately"? You do need the job right? If you have it ready, it will show your prospective employer that you're pro-active and ready. If you wait, you'll come off as somebody who waits and reacts to events.
today would be a good day, it gave them a whole day to call people. I'd say call after lunch to give your refrences time to call back if they were left a message.
Call your refs. and see if they gave it yet adn once they all have then cal the company. It usually can take anywhere fro three to four days for the company to run refs. and do your background check. Good Luck and when you call back, say That you are just calling back to make sure that they were able to contact your refs. and if they couldnt you would call them yourself and have your ref. call thecompany directly.
