How much notice to give when resigning? |
I'm due to leave my job in October and as I have only been a permanent employee from May 07, I am only required to give one months notice. However I really enjoy my job and get along well with my manager and the small team I work in. My family and friends all say I should only give 1 months notice, but I would like to tell them earlier. Would there be any harm in doing this? Could they ask or insist I leave sooner? Depends on how you are paid. Monthly salary would require 1 month notice, weekly paid, 1 weeks notice. However, if you have access to sensitive information they could ask you to go straight away, but you would be eligble to pay in leiu of notice. one week would do.good luck with your new job when you get it. You can include the phrase 'taking effect from ' in your letter, and explain that this is given in advance of your contractual obligation in order to assist the company filling your position. Your contract should tell you what notice is required, and if it doesn't it's just a weeks notice. Best of luck. if your worried about it then just go ahead and tell them now that way maybe you could be the one to train your replacement. Follow your companies guidelines. If this is what the company has set, there is a reason. Yes, they could start hunting for someone to replace you sooner and that person only has to give 2 weeks notice and is ready to start. What do they do then? It is great that you work well with your manager and your co-workers but business is business no matter what. Give the 1 month. You don't burn any bridges that way an will be able to have a good reference in the future. Good Luck It's good to read a story like this. You like the job, the Manager is a likeable guy and you want to do the right thing. A lot depends on whether you have a new job to go to - I think you do. Discuss it with your Boss. He will be grateful for your kind consideration and his advice concerning your formal notice should be followed. It is very unlikely that he will dismiss you for being considerate! You seem to be a caring individual. Pity there are not more like us. They could ask you to leave earlier. They could also hire your replacement now and as soon as you have him/her trained, they could send you on your way. They may also (consciously or unconsciously) start treating you like a lame duck / short timer. If you want to continue the current job in the environment that you currently have, I would suggest giving them the one month they ask for and nothing more. |
