I had an interview last week, and it went so very well. I knew that the interviewer/supervisor was not going back to the office til Friday, and wouldn't contact references til then. Friday afternoon, two of my references let me know she had called them. Then I saw that the supervisor had also emailed me that the references were great, and that the decision would be made today (Monday), but she was waiting to contact one other reference for one other candidate. Anyway, in the email she said that once they make their decision, they send the forms to HR and when HR sends back the salary, then she "can and will call that candidate." So does that mean I am just stuck waiting until HR approves their candidate to find out? Can I do anything else? (Yes, I did the thank you note and didn't have to call for this information, the supervisor emailed that much on her own.) HELP! I really want to make sure I get this job!
So far it sounds like you've done everything right. Now it's a waiting game.
I would make only one follow up call. You must decide when to use it. If you call a lot it might make you seem desperate. I guess you could disguise the desperateness with extreme interest in the position (you know, the whole "I think this job would be perfect for my skill set" routine), but I don't know how many times that will work before they grow tired of you bothering them. Being liked by the people responsible for hiring is often more important than your acutal skills. Even the receptionist or secretary could tip the scales with a single comment to the boss if you rub him/her the wrong way. Same thing goes the opposite way if you are very likable, cordial, yet have a clear purpose in your phone call. |
