When I resign should I go to my Boss or HR?

My boss and I do NOT have a good workign relationship and I'm planning on resigning any day now. I don't care about burning any bridges with her but just want to know if resigning with HR is an acceptable way to go.

Technically you should go to your boss, however, my advice would be to take your letter of resignation to HR first. The very first job that I ever held, I did not have a very good working relationship with my boss (he was sexually harassing me). Anyway, when I went to resign, I wrote my resignation letter to him, but copied the asst. mgr and hr on the letter. I took hr their letter first and they told me that the procedure was to go to my mgr first and then he would bring it to them. So I took it to my mgr. Two hours later hr called me and asked me if I had given him the letter. I said yes and asked why they were asking, I was told that they did not receive the letter from my mgr. HR then called my mgr to ask about the letter and he took it down. To make a long story short, he had no intentions of giving HR my notice. He was going to make it seem like I abandoned my job. Because I went to HR first, his plan was spoiled.
Yes, letting your h.r. dept. know is best. You could tell them whatever problems your having and they might give you advice on how handle it or maybe move you to another department. If you are still set on leaving h.r., can make sure your paper work is in order, especially if you have a 401K or any paychecks due to you.
Then after talking to them give your resignation letter to your boss. Better yet, if your boss is such an a**hole, then just give the letter to h.r. and don't bother telling your boss anything. Just leave after dealing with your h.r. dept., they will let him know you left.

you write a letter and address it to both, being sure to cc your direct supervisor or the head of your department if that's a different person.
Give the letter to your boss first and cc: the HR person. Even if your boss is a complete jerk, that doesn't give you an excuse to be less than professional.

Good luck.
