Can a potential employer ask for your salary history such as a former W-2 or pay stub?

I interviewed for a position recently. Instead of giving me a number as to what the position pays for the job they are offering, they asked for a pay stub or W2 to verify my current salary. Is that right/legal? I thought a job was supposed to offer an amount based on the work they want you to perform.

Yes, it is legal. Many companies verify salary history, though most often through a background check after you sign a waiver (usually with the application, and background checks are always through FCRA). However, it is legal for them to ask to see a pay stub or W-2. Source(s): 10+ years HR experience.
No, they cannot ask you that. That is non of their business. You can tell them whatever they ask you at your own cognizant, and that's where they can get you, but no, they should not ask that of you.
It's legal, and many employers do this now. It's a way to prevent someone who makes $30k from saying that they make $55k and need $60 k to take the job.
Tell them to shove it. They cannot ask you that legally.
