Income in Freelance Graphic Design?

I am having a very difficult time finding out what I want to do with my life. I have been thinking of getting a "day-job" and have my artistic dreams as just a hobby. I am a photographer and I draw also. I would love to show my work in galleries but realize the road as an artist is one with no money :-(

So anyway I have been getting into graphic design. It's not my ideal job but atleast I can do something artistic. I was wondering if I can get some advice on being a freelance Graphic Designer. How is the income? Freelance really is my ideal as far as graphic design goes so I would really like some information on this, especially the income.

I know you want to freelance, but you might look into working in a sign shop for awhile. You can meet a lot of people through the client base there; you can showcase your work through the signs you design; you can design logos and other lettering for vehicles and banners, all the while maintaining your hobby at night and on weekends. You can make some decent money. If you live the Jersey area in U.S., let me know and I can hook you up with a small shop. Email me if interested. Good luck, SHIELD.
Income varies depending on who your working for and how much they are willing to pay.
Hi There,

Your career path as a freelance graphic designer may lead to an income exceeding 5k per job(design) if you are really really good. However to be that good you need more then the necessary great design skills.

You need marketing skills and reputation. You will need to build that reputation by working for well known products or clients. However that is very tough as these clients are only willing to pay for result and therefore will seek services of regulars that they are sure of their work quality.

Try Guru.com and list yourself as a freelancer there. Collect your "work" and build your reputation. It will be hard initially where you may earn like 20 per hour and not more then 100 per job but it can only go upwards from there.

If you are really interested in this career, do a little reading on physchology, marketing and philosophy. Your designs needs more substance then it looks good when rationalising it to clients.

:)

Good Luck mate
Freelance Graphic Design doesn't command any kind of fixed amount. Sometimes you get clients that are willing to pay big for a simple brochure, while at other times you barely break even on a website. You've got to set a "Rate Card" for yourself. Which will show clients how much your time is worth. E.g. If you quote, say $50 dollars an hour and a client requires a brochure design. You need to approximate how many hours of work are involved and give them a quotation accordingly. Your Rate card can include different rates for different sorts of work. E.g. Web graphics can be quoted differently from print media
Before you go "freelance" you need a client base. Freelance plus no clients equals unemployment. So get a job at a graphic design firm, hone your skills for a few years, steal their tricks, get some loyal customers and steal them. It's the American way. The pay at a grapic design firm would be average at best because a lot and I mean a lot of people have graphic design degrees so there is a lot of competition i.e low wages.
