I want to take Auto Shop in high school, but I don't feel like it will help me while looking for a career.

I'm going into 8th grade this year, and that means after this year I go to high school. I've wanted to take auto shop, I've always loved cars but the truth is mechanic is a pretty low-paying job, and I couldn't see a real career in automotive repair.

Are there any places where I can take auto shop classes out of school? I'd like to spend my time in high school studying things that would offer better career opportunities.

Auto Tech. is a good choice even if you don't use the skills as a career you'll know how to keep up maintenance on your vehicle. Saving you money in the long-run.
If you are serous about vehicle maintenance then try Nashville Auto Diesel College which I hear is the best tech. school for that career-field. Good Luck!
Have you thought about maybe Diesel Technology or Aeronautical Maintenance? You don't have to nessarly have to work on cars. Also look into maybe the Aircraft or Diesel (18-wheelers) mechnics. Source(s): nadcedu.com, or www.avscholars.com/AvScholars/...
Depends where you are - you could always do "extra credit" or try apprenticing at a local garage if any will.

If for credit (there are places that offer online auto courses)

If not for credit then why not just research it as a hobby?

Part of HIghschool though is the people you hang out with, your fellow class mates etc.. who you interact and work with.
But your smart to think about where you'd like to be in the future, you're very smart to plan ahead. Wish I was that bright when I was your age. But just so you know mechanics charge up the posterior - but maybe it is just the cost of parts. I'm guessing it'll be mostly robots by the time you graduate though.

Talk with your school counsellor perhaps.

P.S. I took Manufacturing Tech (Including an Auto Portion) and Tech Lab 2000 (which included some things related to cars such as aerodynamic design) pretty basic stuff and not really the full mechanic stuff. Common sense stuff. Welding and stuff is pretty neat stuff very "guyze" but yah there are places outside of school but time wise you may not have the time. Look into it - there may be something where you are.
OK,
And how will you know the basics of the car, so as to become an engineer, etc.?
Most engineers and other with technical skills started by learning about the automobile. They were curious as to how things work.
Go to the following web site and take some of the automotive tests. See what you know.

Good luck
