Presentation tips? |
I've been asked at the last minute to prepare and deliver a presentation next week for a new job I'm just about to start. I'm out of practice at delivering presentations and am prone to getting nervous at these things. Any tips on how to prepare and avoid making a mess of things? I often do presentations and speak in front of people (sometimes even to hostile audiene), and I get nervours every time, too! Here are my tips; 1. Imagine everyone in the room are naked except yourself (actually makes you smile) 2. Divide your audience into three section, and when you do your presentation, speak to each section in turn (e.g. Section 1, 2, then 3). Pls don't repeat Sec 1,2,3 routine, because it could look obvious after a while, so change the order at times -- 1, 2, 3 => 2,3,1 => 3,1,2 etc Don't get too obsessed, you will be doing fine!! 3. Practice: It may sound silly, but it would definitely help if you practice your presentation beforehands even if you are alone with no audience. Do the presentation to your image in the mirror!! If your mirror image looked not-so-confident, research more on the content weakness, or ask yourself why you look less confident on presenting that part. 4. You will not make a mess!! If you are here to post such question, you are already much better prepared than normal people!! (most of the people start reading their presentation only 5 min before!) So you will not make a mess!!!! You will be fine!!! Just be urself dont go using big words if u dont undastand them. good luck find a local chapter of toastmasters, they can help you over come your fears of public speaking and presentations, or you can do it quickly and just have faith in yourself... `i~sKy!;-) The regular things to consider are the topic, how much information you want to deliver (leave out small unnecessary points), timing it right, and are you using props (sign, demo product, chart, etc). As you're developing your piece, use visualization to tie it all together nicely. Visualize yourself delivering the presentation with cool nerves and ease, the words flowing from you with a nice sound and good sense. Remember, they won't perceive the nervous tension you feel, even though you hear it in your own voice. That's not what your audience will hear. Maintain good eye contact and smile or use other appropriate facial gestures. Best wishes. In a week, I would follow these guidelines: Know the material so well, that you could talk about it as if you were having a conversation. Have that conversation with your audience. Speek slowly, loudly!!, and with pregnant pauses in between main points. Identify 3 main points you want to get out of the presentation and nail them. Literally speak "If there were three things I would like you to walk away with today..." Don't over-rehearse, don't script, just know the material. In addition to what said above... to keep yourself confident, do practice before delivering. Do not present without having practiced it atleast once. When you're presenting keep your feet moving, use your hands to describe.. this will kill nervousness. Do not over make up... just try to be natural you. Don't include unnecessary details in the presentation (as we do in classrooms) nobody has got such long times to spare for unnecessary details. If possible, add some humor, decent. |
