Can I be fired...? |
I live in New York State and want to know if I look for other employment, due to my fiance' getting a job, in another part of the state can I be fired from my present employer? Technically you can get fired for any reason, other than discriminatory ones, but this is not something that an employer would typically fire you over. So unless you are using work time and resources to conduct your job search, you should be ok. If they ask, just say you are preparing for the slight chance you may need to relocate but you are hoping that it will not be the case as you love your job! Source(s): Work as corporate recruiter You can be fired for any reason except the color of your skin, your age your sex, your religion or national heritage. most these days are "employment at free will" which means you can be fired for anything that is non-discriminatory ... the exception is if you are under contract ... I'm not sure what the exact laws in NY are, but I think the first answer is right. If you are an "at-will" employee, you can be fired for ANY reason or NO reason (as long as you aren't fired for an illegal reason) Yes, some companies do have a policy about letting people go if they find out you are looking - that's why the big job boards let you post your resume "confidentially" You may also want to talk to placement agencies (temp agencies) Explain that you are still employed, but looking to relocate. The larger ones will still have offices in other parts of the state. Best of luck! Years in Staffing. |
