I have a BA in Economics and am half way through a part-time MBA program. I've been in the mortgage industry 7 years now, but companies are shutting down right and left. My previous 2 employers have closed the doors within the last 12 months. There is no room for growth and I would like to get out of the mortgage industry in a mid-level position but have had no success with Careerbuilder or Monster. Are there other (more personalized) websites? Also, other than entry level job fairs and websites, is there a better way to get a good job? I know I am capable of doing much more and feel stuck in this industry. Thanks in advance for any advice.
7 years is a good amount of time to have established a strong work history. I'd say that you need to start networking. CareerBuilder and Monster are too huge. You need to look on smaller websites that are local to an area you are either living in now or want to move to. There are many of these sites and many employers prefer them because they are less expensive. The best way of getting a good job is putting yourself out there and meeting people that are in the field you are interested in moving into. Good places to meet business people are at social functions put on by the chamber of commerce (your company probably belongs to one). Ours usually has what are called "business after hours" functions and they are a great place to meet people. You might not meet someone in the exact field you are interested in, but they likely will know someone. I find that one of my biggest successes in hiring people is when someone calls and gives me the referral because they met so and so at a party and they are a good candidate. |
